Different types of rashes
Baby’s skin is the most sensitive. Soap, detergent, lotions and other conditions can all cause a rash on your baby. Newborns are especially prone to rashes. A few of the most common rashes you might see are:
Pink Pimples, also called Neonatal Acne, is thought to be caused by exposure to hormones from the mother in the womb during pregnancy. No treatment is needed. This type of rash can last for several weeks.
Diaper Rash is very common in babies. Diaper rash can be caused by anything from moisture in the diaper, chafing, or a change in diet.
Hives are probably one of the most common rashes in babies and children. This type of rash is identifiable by the raised welts on the skin. These welts will be itchy and may come and go.
Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin caused by an excess of bilirubin. Jaundice needs to be treated by a physician.
Preventing rashes
There are a few things you can do to prevent rashes:
Specialized Soaps and Detergents
There are specialized soaps and detergents formulated just for babies. These products tend to be gentler on baby skin and less likely to cause a rash on your baby.
Pat dry
After baths pat your baby’s skin dry. Rubbing a baby to dry them can cause skin irritation.
While most rashes may not be serious, some do require medical attention. If you have questions or concerns about your baby’s skin, seeking professional medical advice is always the best choice.
